I have had no luck with this one and it is a favorite of my wife that I'm trying to track down. Any help would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Kevin Kline - La Mer

La mer
Qu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairs
A des reflets d'argent
La mer
Des reflets changeants
Sous la pluie

La mer
Au ciel d'¨¦t¨¦ confond
Ses blancs moutons
Avec les anges si purs
La mer berg¨¨re d'azur
Infinie

Voyez
Pr¨¨s des ¨¦tangs
Ces grands roseaux mouill¨¦s
Voyez
Ces oiseaux blancs
Et ces maisons rouill¨¦es

La mer
Les a berc¨¦s
Le long des golfes clairs
Et d'une chanson d'amour
La mer
A berc¨¦ mon coeur pour la vie

Thank you so much. Any chance you know the English translation?

I did find out that Bobby Darrin based a song from "La Mer" titled "Beyond the Sea."

Bobby Darin---Beyond The Sea

Somewhere beyond the sea,
Somewhere, waiting for me,
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailing;

Somewhere beyond the sea,
He's (She's) there watching for me.
If I could fly like birds on high,
Then straight to his (her) arms I'd go sailing.

It's far beyond a star,
It's near beyond the moon,
I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon.

We'll meet beyond the shore,
We'll kiss just as before.
Happy we'll be beyond the sea,
And never again I'll go sailing!

The French lyrics came out garbled. Does anyone know how to post them so the French accents come through OK?

Also wondering if there's a recording of the French version (preferably male voclaist)?

Yes, there is a recording of the french version of La Mer. I found it on Kazaa. It is also one of my favourites.

Hello, I too have looked all over for the an english translation of the
Charles Trenet French lyric.

The english lyric in "beyond the sea" bear almost no relation to the French,
except they both involve a big body of salt water.
Also the english has a kind of "sonic" link in that it says: "somewhere"
in the places the French says "la mer".

So, armed with 30 year old college french and babblefish,
(http://www.worldlingo.com/ wl/translate)
here a pretty literal attempt at translation:

La mer
Qu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairs
A des reflets d'argent
La mer
Des reflets changeants
Sous la pluie

The sea
which one sees dancing along the clear gulfs
to sparkles of silver.
The sea
Of changing sparkles
Under the rain.

La mer
Au ciel d'été confond
Ses blancs moutons
Avec les anges si purs
La mer bergère d'azur
Infinie

The sea
Confuses the summer sky's sheep
With angels so pure.
The sea
Shepherdess of blue infinity.

Voyez
Près des étangs
Ces grands roseaux mouillés
Voyez
Ces oiseaux blancs
Et ces maisons rouillées

Look!
Next to the ponds
Those tall wet reeds.
Look!
Those white birds
And those rusty houses [cabins of boats?]

La mer
Les a bercés
Le long des golfes clairs
Et d'une chanson d'amour
La mer
A bercé mon coeur pour la vie

The Sea
Has rocked them [like a baby]
Along the clear gulfs.
The Sea
Has rocked my heart for life.

For a great discussion of the French lyrics by Trenet and the
English lyrics by Jack Lawrence see:

also check out www.musicnotes.com/piano
search "la mer" and you can see the first page of the sheet music...
you can buy the score there for a couple of bucks

arggghhhhh! I dropped a line out of the last verse:

La mer
Les a bercés
Le long des golfes clairs
Et d'une chanson d'amour
La mer
A bercé mon coeur pour la vie

The Sea
Has rocked them [like a baby]
Along the clear gulfs.
And with a song of love
The Sea
Has rocked my heart for life.
