I just found these interesting...(not sure if they're all true)
Did you know...?
*You spend 1/3 of your life sleeping.
*Over the average lifespan you will have up to 100,000 dreams!
*You have 4 to 7 dreams every night.
*Women have more nightmares than men.
*All mammals (except the spiny ant eater) and birds dream, meaning they all have REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep.
*During REM sleep your skeletal muscles are paralyzed. Otherwise you would act out your dreams.
*Alcohol, prescription drugs and illegal drugs can cause nightmares.
*People who are giving up smoking have longer, more intense dreams.
*Women dream more of indoor settings, they notice more color, facial and clothing details, they have more conversations and dream of men and women equally.
*Men dream more of other men, outdoor settings, physical and sexual activity, tools, and money.
*Small children spend 50% of their sleep time dreaming. Adults spend 20% of the night dreaming while senior citizens spend only 15% of the night dreaming.
*Infants spend up to 8 hours a day in REM sleep.
*Children do not appear in their own dreams until the ages of 3 or 4.
*In a recent sleep study, students who were awakened at the beginning of each dream, but still allowed their 8 hours of sleep, all experienced difficulty in concentration, irritability, hallucinations, and signs of psychosis after only 3 days. When finally allowed their REM sleep the students brains made up for lost time by greatly increasing the percentage of sleep spent in the REM stage.
*The blind dream more prominently in sound, smell, touch and emotion.
*People who became blind after birth claim to see in their dreams.
*Snoring ceases during the dream-state.
*The bible contains more than 700 dreams and visions.
*The Rock Classic "Yesterday" came to Paul McCartney in a dream
*The story of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde was a dream that Robert Louis Stevenson had.
*Every body’s favorite monster, Frankenstein came to Mary Shelly in a dream.
*There are 8 recorded cases of survivors and would be passengers who dreamed of the sinking of the Titanic - before it sank!
*Mark Twain dreamed of his brother's death in a river boat accident - before it actually happened!
*We have the sewing machine thanks to Elias Howe who dreamed of how to make it work.
*Albert Einstein claims that "Einsteins Theory" came to him in a dream.

Crazy stuff
Some random tidbits I've found out:
Depression and dreams:
There is a negative correlation between suicidality and low REM latency. And there is a positive correlation between suicidality and a high percent of REM sleep.
Depression may include a reduction of slow wave sleep, a disinhibition of REM sleep (means you get a lot of REM sleep), a shortening of REM latency, a longer first REM period, and an increased REM density (higher REM sleep out of total sleep).
Oh, and REM latency is the time is takes from when you fall asleep, from when you have your first REM cycle. Also, slow-wave sleep is just another type of sleep, one where your body restores itself, among other things.

Yeah but don't people sleepwalk? Isn't that the same as acting out your dreams? I guess that's after REM sleep though...I don't really understand...

Interesting...where' d you find that?
I got interested in the whole subject of sleep and depression. The actual post was from a introduction I wrote, but if you wanna see the actual experiment summaries, I could prolly link you to them in a PM or something.
And yeah, I don't think sleep walking is acting out your dreams, I believe it's another stage of sleep.
