And why it was the one. It doesn't have to be the first game you ever touched. maybe you want to pick the one that made you start gaming more regularily, maybe something that has sentimental importance.
For me, I got 2.
Super Mario Bros \ Duck Hunt was the first one that I played a lot and with friends.
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past - This is the game that got me into this pastime hardcore. Must've beaten it 6 or 7 times.

The Game That Got You Into Gaming

I remember when I was a kid when my family got our first Super Nintendo, it came with four games I think, three I can remember, they were Super Mario World, Pilot Wings and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. These weren't the first games I've played but the first I remember clearly enough.
Super Mario World was the first game I got addicted to and it's the one that made me fall in love with video games; I think that's the first game kid should play to get into games, it's simple and fun and gets deeper once you start pursuing to beat all the levels in every possible combination.
Zelda was still to confusing at the time, but I was getting the hang of Pilot Wings(a flight simulator with about everything flight worthy in it); I knew how to do the skydiving but I would always wreck the plane while trying to land; one day I saw my mom land the plane right so I copied her and it went on from there. I never got into flight simulators but I still love that game.
And I finally figured Zelda out when my cousin(who was younger than me) came in and showed me some things he saw his uncle do, we got the hang of it, figured out how to do things on our own and eventually beat it. This game is still my favorite game and I think this is what really got me into gaming.
Edit: I think the fourth game was Zombies Ate My Neighbors, a classic game, but not noteworthy here because I couldn't do anything in it at the time; my mom beat it in it's entirety in one sitting though, and I thought that was awesome.

Everything Chazz says is both a lie and the complete truth. You can spend your entire life trying to understand how this could be so, but your head would explode exactly 97 seconds before you achieve your goal.

I like this topic and wonder why it wasn't created earlier.
The first game i played was Super Mario Bros. However This game didn't get me addicted namely because at the time i was four and sucked at it. I'd have to say that the first game i played and really enjoyed was duck hunt although i can't say it made me a gamer.
I remember christmas of 95' is when i got my snes with it Mega Man X. Mega Man X was like crystal meth in game form. I don't know how much time i put into it, but yet to date i have still not defeated sigma!! I'd also like to put a mention to Final Fantasy Mystic Quest that game got me addicted to rpgs and improved my vocabulary back in the day.

Must have been Command and Conquer 95'
Loved that game, just couldn't beat the final level on Nod. Still can't really beat it, although I haven't played the game for about 2 years.

I'm pretty sure it was Mystic Quest that got me into RPGs as well. Gawd, I loved that game.

Pilotwings was a very important game for me too, I played that so much, and I think the first time I ever experienced the "Eureka! moment" (the moment you finally figure out how to do something that has stumped you for as long as you can remember) was when I landed the hangglider. I always just drifted down slowely, touched the ground at about .001 mph and then crashed somehow. Then I figured out you had to press and hold a button which I never knew what it did until then.
