I wasn't sure where to put this but it seemed like it could fit here so...here it is, all my thoughts and theories(there are kinda deep) on time travel.some will be posted later.
1st thing most people grasp about time travel is the cycle versus no cycle theories (sorry bout the wording, didn't know accual title). While not all people get this, this was what i understood first, thanks to several movies. This is that either time travels in a cycle and if we go back in time, we would have been ment to and our other selve going through time would always go back as well. the reverse of this is that time exist in many streams and pathes and we follow one path, if we go back in time, we may branch it into another path.
the next thing to understand is that ways to break a cycle in time exist (assuming we could go back) lets say you go back in time and give your younger self a dog. your younger self groews up, goes back in time and gives his younger self the same dog. according to the cycle effect, this would continue indefinately. one problem, the dog will continue aging, even while going back in time. and of course the dog will eventually die, but then what about the cycle? well that would prove that the cycle theory is incorrect. This however doesn't mean that the other is true. it just means that one possibility most likely isn't
the info i have give has been my thoughts based on other peoples ideas. what i have theoriezed about is the idea that if we could go back in time, where would we be located? most think that it would be in the same spot on, only back however many years. i have come to realize this isn't very likely. time is not restricted to gravity, so why assume we would be anchored to the planet when going back in time. i think we would be in the spot we are in relation to the universe, only back however many years.
i hope this isn't too complicated for anyone and i also hope this is put in the right forum, but that is up to you to decide.

i believe time travel is impossible. the closest thing that i somewhat think may be possible is that in the book Timeline. the quantum computer has already been made. and that of the information thats given in the book is very close to how quantum physics really do work.

time travel might be possible and we wouldnt know it because it would alter all reality around us and give us new memories as if we actually remembered them. for all we know some guy in the year 2852 just changed the course of history 15 seconds ago and all our lives were just rewritten and we would have no clue.
actually i know what your getting at but your example is incorrect as in that theory you would not give yourself the same dog, you would get a new dog from the same place and keep the one you already had, therefor you would always have 1 dog. no matter what reality you were in.

That doesn't mean the theory is wrong. If I went to the store now, bought a dog, and gave it to myself as a child, I would grow up with the dog, but there would still be another dog, at the store.

I THINK timetravell is a COMPLETE load of rubbish,
but it makes a good movie, and It WOULD be quality if we could perform it ourselves.
But come to think of it.. there would be no point in those dudey little gypsy/wisdom ladies that you get at a fair...
Oh, and Weather persons would not be needed...

it might not be possible in our generations but it will most likely happen in future generations

Driving fast, Fixing car(s), Playing games, Watching sci-fi/fantasy movies, Eating food, Sleeping.
If you see me in my free time, I'm probably doing one of those.

and according the the theory we were refering to, you would then go out and buy the one at the store once you grew up and then you would travel back in time and give your younger-younger self the dog, he grows up and so does his dog, the he buys a new young one from the same store and gives it to your younger-younger-younger self. then that self grows up and his dog grows up then he goes back to the store and buys a dog and travels back in time to give to you....
anyways i think you get what i'm getting at.

you all sem to go with the idea that time is a path, layed out and going only one way. i don't think it is. i think that time is constantly changing, an ocean of different paths that are decided by random occurances and coinicident. to say it differently, i beleive that if someone goes back in time, they could change their future. the only problem i can come up with is that if their future was changed by going back in time, then the new futured self won't go back in time and thus the old future self would revert back. this would cause a cycle effect, right? but it also would corrupt the cycle theory by the ability to change the future and cause a different outcome to happen. see the problem? a parodox exist that allows both a cycle effect and a broken cycle effect.
as for the history of humanity being effected completely, i wouldn't worry too much. before anyone can go back in time, they would need to make some sort of beacon for the sent back signal to grasp, otherwise they might be sent back and appear in space. remember, time isn't restricted by gravity. so becausae no such devise has been made (to my knowledge), no one can go back futher than when the devise is made, which will be in the future. so i wouldn't worry too much.

This reminds me of my recurring nightmare about me timetraveling.
I go back In time to correct a mistake (lets say 10 mins or whatever) but when I go back, my self in the future is not there, my actually atoms and mass are in the past and cannot go back and time causing a revert to the future where I go back and time causing me to be stuck in an infinate loop.
I wouldnt be surprized if any screwing around with time caused that. Crap I just creeped myself out.
